My on-demand platform Poletica Movement has tutorials for all levels, including a Pole Foundations series covering pole fundamentals.
And while most of my virtual and in-person classes cater to intermediate and advanced levels, I love teaching beginners on a one-on-one basis. Contact me at natasha@poleticamovement.com for details.

Just your body and a pole! There are several quality pole manufacturers on the market that allow you to easily install a pole at home, no drilling required. I recommend the X-Pert Pro from X-Pole, which will run you about $400-500 USD.

Here’s a secret…I don’t have a background in those either! I started pole at 30 with no movement experience except for a few months of ballet when I was six, a summer of gymnastics at 11, and high school volleyball (as a benchwarmer). In fact, when I took my pole class, I hadn’t exercised in over 10 years. While those with movement experience might progress faster, it’s not a pre-requisite for learning pole. There are plenty of world-class pole dancers who started pole without any prior fitness experience at all.

Come as you are, because you will get stronger with pole. You will also get more flexible, coordinated, graceful, powerful, toned and confident.

If you look up pole dancers on Instagram, you’ll see them wearing everything from sticky full-coverage leggings to g-strings. However, most train in sports bras and small shorts that allow the shoulders, arms, waist, stomach and legs to be exposed and grip the pole. Because most poles are made of metal, there needs to be skin contact (or in the sticky leggings example, rubberized material) in order to stick. Regular fabric will be too slippery and dangerous.

My ‘grip kit’: Homemade glycerine spray, Better Grip and occasionally iTac2 on my contact points. I’ve experimented with many different pole grips over the years, but these are my go-to’s, and work the best across climates and pole finishes.
